Although DC's increase in cycling was not as remarkable as some of the other Northeastern cities, DC started the decade with more bike commuters.
Of the 55 cities reported in the study, only 9 showed a decline in percentage of bike commuters, while 21 cities doubled or more than doubled their biking percentages. The city with the greatest percentage of bike commuters is Portland OR with 5.8%. The only other cities with higher bike commuting percentages than the Washington DC region were:
- Minneapolis - 3.0%
- San Francisco - 3.0%
- Seattle - 3.0%
- Oakland - 2.5%
- New Orleans - 2.5%
- Honolulu - 2.3%
In my opinion, if everyone start to ride on bike when they go anywhere is the best way of reducing energy consumption. If we use bike, we will reduce our fuel consumption which will lessen the air pollution we produce in riding our automobile.
